
Now home to Ardglass Golf Club, Ardglass Castle started life in the 15th century as a series of waterside buildings. The most well-known ghostly figure is Elizabeth, also known as Maud, who sometime in the 1600s was caught cheating with a solider from the nearby castle and dispatched by her jealous husband (the building’s owner at the time) Hugh. With a history going back more than 500 years, it’s no surprise that there might be a former resident or two still lurking about this old building. Rumour has it that if the stone covering his grave were to be moved, he’d be free to come back to life, even more bloodthirsty than before.

An all-round wrong-un, he was rumoured to have drunk the blood of his poor unfortunate victims and had to be killed three times before being buried head down to make sure he wasn’t coming back. Abhartach, a chieftain who is sometimes known as the Irish vampire, died in the fifth century and was buried in this area where a single hawthorn tree now grows over the stones of his tomb. Located just outside Belfast, this Neolitihic henge is thought to have been built around 2,700BC and has a tomb at its centre, which is pretty spooky in itself.
